Although we import most of our flowers from the Dutch stock exchange, roses travel to you from a much greater distance. Their journey begins in distant Ecuador. They have bigger flowers, stronger stems and are more durable, which is why they are called the queens of roses. Meet Her Majesty the Rose Queen of Ecuador.
In the equatorial country of Ecuador, the second smallest in South America, you will find beautiful beaches and high mountains. Here, the plants receive an ideal dose of sunlight (many local farms do not need to use artificial lighting), and at the same time, they are grown at higher altitudes and therefore in a cooler climate. Thanks to this, the roses are very strong and can grow up to 1.5 meters. Even their flowers are much larger compared to, for example, Dutch roses.
Lasts up to 6 weeks
We all know it, flowers they are beautiful but also fleeting. After a few days, their flowers often droop sadly. However, this should not happen to you with proper care of roses from Ecuador. Up to 6 weeks should be great for you at home.
How to take care of roses:
- Roses are indeed queens, but also "drama queens". They don't tolerate drafts, so be careful they don't blow. When transferring in cold and windy weather, be sure to wrap them really well in paper.
- At home, before placing in a vase, cut the ends at an angle, a fresh cut allows the flower to absorb much more nutrients.
- The water in the vase should be about ⅓ full and should be warm, at least 35°C. This is different from, for example, tulips, which, on the other hand, prefer ice water.
- Change the water every 2-3 days, cutting the stems slightly with each change. Again, warm water won't damage anything.
- Roses do need the sun to grow, but in a vase, place them in partial shade, where the sun can't burn them.

Something from our pink backstage
The flower market is incredibly fast. All plants must arrive at the flower shop fresh and preferably not in bloom so that they can make the new owners happy at home for as long as possible. For example, on the Dutch stock exchange, thousands of flowers are turned over in a single morning (we wrote how it works on the Dutch stock exchangein one of our previous articles). In the morning they arrive from all corners of the world, and in a few hours they often head to another continent to be displayed in the flower shop in the morning.
For Ecuadorian roses, the process is even more specific. From the moment it is cut on the farm to being displayed in stores, usually a week passes. However, this does not affect the quality and their lifespan - quite the opposite. Roses are imported hypothermic and in the dark - they are in boxes hibernating, they don't even need water. Thanks to the fact that they are stored without water for several days, the risk of mold and other complications caused by moisture is eliminated.
The “ripening” process starts when the stems are cut again and the flower is watered. At that moment, the rose is ready to be displayed in our shop and delight the new owners for up to 6 weeks.
